Lake Como
VARENNA AND LAKE COMO ARE VERSATILE AND OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES IN ALL SEASONS.
Varenna offers sunshine and warmth well into the evening. This old fishing town boasts interesting shops for all ages – from art galleries to bars. Hungry travelers will also find plenty to eat, from simple yet high-quality pizzerias to elegant restaurants. Varenna's waterfront promenade, starting at the harbor and leading along the water to numerous cafes and restaurants, is an absolute must-see! From there, many narrow, picturesque lanes lead up to the upper part of town, where you'll find upscale restaurants and hotels, as well as the charming gardens of Villa Cypressi.
Lake Como and its surroundings in every season
Simply enjoy the truly picturesque Italian villages and towns, celebrate the Italian way of life, indulge in culinary delights, go "power shopping" in Como, nearby Milan, or one of the many charming shops around the lake.
For those of us who crave sunshine and warmth, pleasant temperatures for sitting outdoors (espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato on the terrace or at a piazza…) are available as early as March. From then on, camellias, laburnum, azaleas, roses, and more also begin to bloom.
In spring and summer, you can enjoy all kinds of water sports (sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddling, etc.) or simply cool off in the lake's crystal-clear and refreshing water. If you prefer to stay dry, you can hike in the mountains with breathtaking panoramic views; for a more adrenaline rush, try paragliding (in the north of the lake). Summer, with its warm temperatures, lasts until mid-September, after which the tourist season also slows down.
Autumn is a particularly beautiful time for hikes with impressionistic foliage colors.
In winter, the lake also presents special charms such as snow-covered mountain peaks and magnificent sunsets. Nearby ski resorts like Madesimo (with fantastic slopes!) and St. Moritz (about 60 km away) offer a variety of downhill runs. From February onwards, you can enjoy a contrasting experience and discover the lush green landscapes around the lake.
The world-famous towns of Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna, Cernobbio, etc., invite you to linger. The world-renowned gardens and villas are also a particular highlight (especially interesting for James Bond and Star Wars fans)!
Special Highlights
CASTELLO DI VEZIO
(A 20-minute walk away!) From there you have an unparalleled view of Lake Como! The remains of the castle are well-maintained and the garden is beautifully landscaped. Those eager to learn can discover the history of this place from numerous information panels. A visit is highly recommended!
SENTIERO DEL VIANDANTE
(Accessible from the villa in two directions!) This hiking trail, divided into 6 sections, is 68 km long and runs from Abbadia Lariana in the south to Morbegno in the north. Those wishing to hike a longer section can also return by train!
VILLA MONASTERO WITH BOTANICAL GARDEN
The villa was – as the name suggests – originally a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1208. The building is an interesting example of mixed architectural styles that theatrically complement the overall appearance!
ROMANTIC WALK
A must-do is the romantic footpath starting at Varenna's harbor, leading along the waterfront to various cafes and restaurants. From there, many narrow, picturesque lanes lead back up to the upper part of the town.
